When I Learned How To Drive…
Oh Wait, That Hasn’t Happened Yet
Driving.
It’s a rite of passage most people undergo when they’re teenagers to obtain more freedom as they figure out their lives. They can’t wait for their license to appear in their mailbox.
And their parent hold their breaths and press the imaginary brake as their children learn.
Most People Start Learning How to Drive at 15
But not me.
I don’t know why, either. Perhaps it was a lack of urgency, or there wasn’t a spare vehicle for me to use, or maybe I didn’t have the money to pay car expenses.
But it’s something I regret not learning then.
Why I Still Haven’t Learned
To be honest, I haven’t really needed to until now.
Back in Washington, I lived on a bus route, and my friends and parents would drive me to wherever I needed to go. And, on occasion, Uber had my back.
But living in Texas is a different story.
While I can walk to plenty of places, such as the movie theater across the street or to Target down the road, it’s a hot, sweaty trek that no one from a colder state wants to endure.
