When you love animals, you imagine yourself rescuing an animal at least once in your life. It’s been romanticized through movies and television.

Well, I had that opportunity.

And I squandered it.

It Was a Couple of Years Ago

While living in Washington one summer, a pair of birds made a nest in the Boxwood next to the walkway leading to the porch.

But I didn’t know it until I trimmed the Boxwood.

I was surprised and stopped trimming, as I didn’t want to disturb the nest, although I used the hedge cutters on the other parts of the bush so it wouldn’t be in our way.

It was cool to see the tiny eggs and birds protecting them. And when the eggs hatched, I smiled each time I saw the chicks.

I thought I would get to see them grow until they were old enough to fly away to repeat the cycle.

Then it Happened

One day, I walked outside and saw that the nest had fallen out of the bush. The chicks were…
